What is aging? Aging: it is a continuous irreversible, physical, psychological, social and spiritual change, from that of simpler levels of organization towrds more complex levels. AGING POPULATION: it is a population in which people aging 65 years old and above excceds 8-10% of the total population.

Reality! Over the past two centuries improvements in the nutrition , sanitation and health care have dramatically reduced infant mortality and extended the life expectancy of children and adults throughout the world

Statistical data

Conclusion of stastical data.. Over the past 50 years the elderly population world wide had tripled and will more than triple over next 50 years.

implications The working population will have less children but more elderly people to take care of. There will be a decline in the working population thus a decline in national revenue. Lesser demands for investment and more expenditures as retirees spend off their pension. Countries will find it expensive to maintain their expanding elderly population, as the working age group declines.

CONT.. There will be a shift in the focus of financing, from commerce to social walfare and health care. There will be a great strain in the national pension system. There will be a great strain in the adequancy of health care services. Health care shifts from acute care to chronic care.

Nursing implication Increse demand for specialized training in geriatric care. Redefining nursing services distribution and delivery. Making it more of reach to elderly.

CONT.. Redefining nursing approach with emphasis of appropriate attitudes and values in the care of elderly giving importance more to their developmental needs and innate humanity. After all aging isn't that bad!
